AN INITIAL contract has been awarded for all six P-8A Poseidons for the Republic of Korea, all four for the government of New Zealand and an additional six for the US Navy.  The advance acquisition contract awarded to Boeing by US Naval Air Systems Command on February 28, which is a modification to a previous firm fixed-price contract, is valued at $428,896,674 and covers long-lead material and activities for these 16 Lot 11 Poseidons.  Work is expected to be completed in June 2020.

To date, the US Navy has ordered 108 production aircraft, with the latest deal beginning procurement of the next six production aircraft out of a total planned acquisition of 117 aircraft.  In addition, six system development and demonstration Poseidons were also delivered.

South Korea selected the P-8A to replace the Republic of Korea Navy’s P-3C Orions in June 2018.  US State Department approval for acquisition of six of these aircraft for the ROKN was announced on September 13, 2018.

Similarly, New Zealand’s purchase of the type to replace the Royal New Zealand Air Force’s P-3K2 Orions was given US State Department approval on April 28, 2017.  The New Zealand Government subsequently announced on July 9, 2018, that it had agreed to purchase four Poseidons.
